QUITE ABLE
Decision Soon On Campaign (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Aug. 22. Spring plans for the New Zealand galloper. Quite Able, will be made after his Australian debut in the weight-for-age J. J. Liston Stakes, seven furlongs, at Flemington on Saturday. Quite Able will be ridden by Larry Moir, stable jockey of the horse’s Caulfield trainer. R. Wallis. Wallis said last night: “I want to see Quite Able race first before deciding on his lead-up races to the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. “But Quite Able. whose main mission is the Melbourne Cup, may run in the weight - for - age Craiglee Stakes, one mile and two furlongs, at Flemington on September 8.” Wallis, who said that Quite Able also would contest the Caulfield Cup. nominated the horse yesterday for the weight - for - age Memsie Stakes, nine furlongs, at Caulfield on September 1. Other local top-line cup hopes entered for the Memsie Stakes include Dhaulagiri, Zinga Lee. New Statesman, Teppo Star, Sometime Blue Lodge, Nilarco and Marco Khan. Lord Not Engaged Lord, which has won the Memsie Stakes for the last four years in succession and which will try again this year, is not engaged in the cups.
Two New Zealand gallopers. Apa and Far Step, were nominated from Wellington for the £4OOO Toorak Handicap. the big mile event on October 13—the first day of the Caulfield Cup meeting.
The horses, which are trained by T. R. Howe at Awapuni, have been booked to travel by air to Melbourne early in October. The horses will stay with the former New Zealand trainer J. MacDonald at Caulfield. The V.A.T.C. yesterday received 102 nominations for the Toorak Handicap, one of the best entries for years Last year 86 horses were entered for the race. Horses engaged this year include Sometime. Grand Print and New Statesman, the first three favourites for the 1962 Caulfield Cup. The last horse to take the ToorakCaulfield Cup double was Grey Boots, 12 years ago. Anonyme and Havelock first and third in the Toorak Handicap last year, are in the race again. The 11 Sydney nominations include the former New Zealand horse Burgos, now trained by T. J. Smith.
Ellerslie Scratching. So Wealthy has been scratched for the Karaka Hack Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday. This allows Little Moss to re-enter the field.— 'P.A )
