Uttley often weaved his way through in solo runs or clapped on the pace before manoeuvring his wingers into position. It was a contrasting story with the South Canterbury backs. The insides indulged in badlyjudged kicking which only allowed Wellington to regain possession of the ball.
Scorers for Wellington were Dennehy (3) Sutton (31 and Uttley (2). Williment kicked four conversions and a penalty South Canterbury’s points came from tries by B Hutcheson and J M Cole (21. and two conversions by C. J. Rogers.
