TAINTED MILK

Down-Grading Of Butter (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 22. Thousands of pounds of butter being manufactured in Taranaki daily is being down-graded because of milk tainted by land cress on coastal farms throughout the province. The same trouble occurred last year, but the incidence of the weed appeared to have increased considerably this year, said a dairy instructor for the Department of Agriculture at New Plymouth Mr R. J. Preston, today. A warning to farmers to watch out for the weed in their pastures had been issued by the department. Milk from only one farm could taint a whole tanker load.

A tanker carried usually about 1500 gallons of milk, and this was equal to about 300 boxes of butter each weighing 561 b.
