DISPOSAL OF BUILDINGS
Closed Branch Lines (Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 22. The Minister ■of Railways (Mr McAlpine) today outlined the policy for the disposal of buildings on discontinued branch lines and the control of noxious weeds along the closed tracks. Mr McAlpine said that buildings best suited to sale for removal would be sold by public tender before making the railway reserve Crown land.
More substantial buildings, such as goods sheds or houses, were best dealt with in the first instance in conjunction with their sites. These would be transferred to the Lands Department with the land.
“Salvage contractors are normally neither versed in weed control nor interested in the work.” said Mr McAlpine. “Further. once track and bridges are lifted, the only access is often by way of the properties of adjoining owners and this raises difficulties.
'•The best solution appears to be to expedite the ultimate disposal of the land and this will be done.”
