BIG U.S. ROCKETS

More To Be Spent (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Aug. 21. The United States Defence Secretary (Mr McNamara) said today that the United States plans to spend more money on huge booster rockets in an attempt to overcome Russia’s “substantial” lead in some space developments.

Until these big rockets were available. Mr McNamara told a press conference, the United States would not be able to match such Soviet feats as sending two cosmonauts into lengthy orbital flights. He said efforts would be made in the new military budget to be submitted to Congress next January to “overcome this deficiency” in American boosters. One great hope was the Titan HI. The Defence Department yesterday ordered work to start on it.

Mr McNamara said the Titan 111 would have between two and three times—“closer to three” —the thrust that is generated by the Soviet Union’s present big booster rocket. The Titan 111 would not be ready for “workhorse” space duty until 1964 or 1965.
