“NO TIME TO WASTE”
(From Our Own Reporter)
WELLINGTON. August 22. Mr R. Walker, general manager of Fruit Distributors, Ltd., agents for the bananas in the holds of the African Reefer, said tonight he knew that the Lyttelton stoppage occurred after a communication had been received from Wellington, but he was at a loss to .know why the watersiders had refused to discharge the vessel. “All I can say is that the same vessel brought bananas regularly to New Zealand from Samoa last year, and that we know no cause for the seamen’s or watersiders' attitude.” Mr Walker said.
“The ship is engaged by us to run this service. She ran between Samoa and New Zealand during the last six months of last year. This is the first voyage she has made with bananas this year—but as far as I know there is nothing unusual about it.” Mr Walker said he had only just returned from Samoa. The ship discharged at Dunedin yesterday, and then proceeded to Lyttelton to carry out her normal discharging programme. “No doubt this matter will be settled,” he added. "I hope this can be done soon, for otherwise there will be no alternative to sending the vessel to sea to throw the bananas overboard. Tlftre is no time to waste with fresh fruit.”
