Engineer’s Report On Norwich Quay Widening
Preliminary plans for the widening of Norwich quay were discussed at a meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council. Members were shown a plan prepared by the consulting engineer (Mr H. G. Roydis). According to the engineer's accompanying report, the Ministry of Works attitude to the widening of Norwich quay was likely to be governed by the fact that there were to be only two lanes in the road tunnel. In this case it would appear that the Ministry would consider the widening of the quay to be unnecessary, the report said. Any subsidy would only apply to the present width of the quay. This did not mean that the road could not be widened, the report said. In fact it would be short-sighted not to widen it by at least 10ft. The report said that the Lyttelton Harbour Board engineer agreed in principle to the lay out of the parapet road to No. 7 wharf. Part of this belonged to the Harbour Board and the rest, either to the Railways Department or the Crown. If it was made a public road, it would qualify for a National Roads Board subsidy and this seemed a good step, the report said. Referring to Gladstone quay, the engineer’s report suggested a three-lane road, say 3fift wide, with a footpath on the western side as this should be all that was necessary for many years. It was suggested, however, that the
land should be taken up for a full fifift road.
The plan was not final but could be used as a basis for discussion, the report said. The council handed the plan to its town planning committee, authorising it to show them informally to the tunnel road co-ordinating committee. Free Rubbish Collection.— The Council intends to repeat the free collection of rubbish which was so successful in the borough some months ago. Corsair Bay Raft.— The council has accepted an offer by the Sumner Round Table to supply a raft for Corsair Bay and also the offer to construct a “Welcome" sign on Evans Pass.
