Bus Concessions
Sir, —School children travelling on Transport Board buses receive substantial concessions. Of course, Mr J R. Smith is in favour of that Will Mr J. R Smith travel on any bus carrying school children (especially secondary) and see the number occupying seats while older people (pensioners who pay full fare) are forced to stand? Not all pensioners are looking for charity and hand-outs, but they do appreciate such gestures as Mrs R. M. Macfarlane’s effort to recognise their past services as useful, worthy citizens of t-heir community. The last portion of Mr J. R Smith's reasoning is the hardest to understand: ‘‘No concessions can be enter-ta-in-ed for pensioners because Christchurch has the cheapest fane rates in New Zealand.” Will Mr J. R. Smith be permitted by the Citizens' Association to propound this philosophy at the forthcoming municipal elections? —Yours, etc., TOM BRYCE. August 21, 1962.
