U Thant’s Proposals

The United Nations Secre-tary-General <U Thant) has worked out a new Congo peace plan and he announced he would call for economic sanctions against the secessionist Katanga Province unless it accepted the proposal quickly, the Associated Press reported. He did not say how much time the Premier of Katanga <Mr Tshombe) would be given, but an authorised United Nations source said an affirmative answer must be received within a week or 10 days, or U Thant would start machinery moving to put an "economic squeeze" or. Katanga, Associated Press reported. One proposal advanced by U Thant called for complete
integration of the Katanga armed forces in the Congolese Army within three months.
