REPORT OF DROWNING
Unsafe Boats Used By Children
Criticism of the type of boats being used by children in the Waimakariri riyer has been made by Constable I. Harris, of the Kaiapoi police, in a report to the Kaiapoi Borough Council on the drowning tragedy on July 21.
Constable Harris said the boats used by some children were death traps. “When these boats are being constructed, the parents of the children concerned do not inspect them or give advice on their construction.
“Some children are only seven or eight years of age, and when told to take the boats out of the river, say that their parents know where they are,” said Constable Harris. “The boat that was used in the tragedy was only safe to be launched in 2ft to 3ft of water,” he said. A copy of the report is to be sent to the Royal Humane Society.
