Golf W. J. GODFREY IN FORM

Six Birdies In 69 (N.Z. Press Association) NAPIER, Aug. 21. The New Zealand golfer, W. J Godfrey, headed the list of 16 qualifiers for the New Zealand Maori championship at Napier yesterday by five strokes. Godfrey had a 69 in the first round, scoring six birdies on the par 72-course, and eased up in tne second to return 75. for a gross total of 144. The championship proper starts tomorrow.

Other leading qualifiers were: 149—S. Cashell (Taihape). 153 T. Ormsby (Otorohanga); 158— J. Matehaere (Te Awamutu), Z. Gray (Otaki). In the women's championship, the defending champion. Mrs D. G. Lawrence (Rotorua) was extended in the first round of match play by Mrs M. Sciascia (Porangahau), but won, 2 and 1 Mrs L. Ansett (Napier) scored the biggest win of the round when she defeated Miss R. Kingl (Marton), 8 and 6.

N.Z. Entry In Women’s Title

Six New Zealanders are in a field of 105 competitors for the Australian women's golf championship, to be played at Glenelg Club, Adelaide, from September 17 to 29. The New Zealand Tasman Cup team, which will arrive in Melbourne on September 10, will play a match against a Victorian team at the Victoria club on September 12.
