ADDINGTON MARKET Too Many Heavy Cattle Again Yarded

Too many heavy eattle were again included in the fat cattle section at Addington Market yesterday and in some cases these were again easier. Medium-weight cattle were in short supply and sold well.

A few useful pens of store cattle also sold well in comparison with fat cattle. Another big yarding of fat hoggets met a slightly easier market and,in the fat sheep section prices tended to be from firm to slightly better.

There was only a small entry of store sheep, and values were mainly on a par with late rates. A feature of the sale was the line of ewes and lambs which brought up to 38s all counted.

STORE SHEEP The feature of the store sheep market was the further entries of ews with lambs at foot. A good line from the Rangiora district under very keen competition brought the exceptionally good price of 38s, which was iully up to anything paid last year. It might, however, be unwise to take this sale as a general indicator of the trend of the market for the ewes and lambs

Other classes of store sheep were yarded in fairly small numbers and were of generally average quality. The market was not very animated with an average-size gallery following the sale, and prices were generally similar to those ruling last week. The entry totalled 1684 head, compared with 2008 last week, and included 781 hoggets (1381 last week),. 67 two-tooth ewes (13) 673 older ewes (397), and 163 ewes and lambs (142).

Wether hoggets predominated in the hogget section. Shorn wether hoggets sold from 35s to 38s. with a further selection of Romney cross sheep from Waimairi Farm (Horrelville) selling to the higher price Wether hoggets in the wool ranged from 32s to 41s 6d, with J. Edge (Lyttelton) selling 34 Romneys at 41s 6d. Woolly ewe hoggets realised from 41s to 525, with 129 Romneys from an unspecified North Canterbury vendor at the higher money. Sales of hoggets included:— Pyne. Gould. Guinness Ltd, sold: on account of Estate A. Weaver (Te Pirita). 35 shorn Corriedale wether hoggets at 355, client, 64 Corriedale ev»j hoggts at 47s 6d; S. E. Ogg (Dalmair), 17 shorn Romney hoggets at 355: D. C. McMillan (Irwell), 30 Romney wether hoegets at 40s.

New Zealand Farmers' Cooperative Association, Ltd, sold, on account of: Waimairi Farm, Ltd. (Horrelville), 148 shorn Romney cross wether hoggets at 37s to 38s: R. H. Washbourne (Dunsandel). 74 Romney wether hoggets at 40s: North Canterbury client, 129 Romney ewe hoggets at 52s Id; Darfield client, 39 Romney wether hoggets at 32s Dalgety and N.Z. Loan. Ltd., sold, on account of: J. Edge i Lyttelton), 20 Romney ewe hoggets at 41s, 34 Romney wether hoggets at 41s 6d. About three pens of ewes and lambs were included in the yarding. Thirty-eight woolly Corriedale ewes with 55 forward Southdown lambs at foot from Ashworth Bros. (Rangiora) sold for 38s, all counted, and two other pens of woolly ewes and lambs sold at 30s and 235. Details of lamb sales were:— National Mortgage and Agency Company Ltd, and H. Matson and Company sold, on account of: Ashworth Bros. (Rangiora), 38 ewes and 55 lambs at 38s.

Dalgety and New Zealand Loan, Ltd, sold, on account of: A. O. Lowe (Femside), 22 Corriedale ewes and 22 lambs at 30s.

The adult ewe yarding Included a few useful pens of inlamb ewes close to lambing, but some of these had doubtful mouths. Shorn two-tooth ewes sold to 53s for a pen of Corriedales mated with Southdown rams from M. T. Buckley (Darfield), and woolly four, six and

eight-tooth Romneys said on account of a client realised 535. Two and four-tooth maiden Corriedale ewes from J A. Westenra (Donadea) brought 51s. Older mated ewes sold from 40s to 50s for woolly sheep with Waimairi Farm (Horrelville) receiving 50s for Romneys in lamb to Romney rams and shorn sheep sold from about 23s to 28s.

Sales included:— Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd, sold, on account of: A. R. Bussell (Upper Riccarton), 207 mated Corriedale ewes at 40s to 455: client, 74 mated Romney four, six, and eight-tooth ewes at 535: J. A. Westenra. (Donadeal. 30 one-shear Corriedale maiden ewes at 51s.

Petrie (Woodend), 8 at 48s Id. FAT HOGGETS Values for fat hoggets eased on last week’s rates but considering there was another big entry—the yarding was 2590 compared with 2187 last week—the sale was not a bad one The selection was fairly mixed with a larger proportion of plain and unfinished sheep in the section.

The sale opened out on an easier note and tended to slacken further toward the end. but hoggets were still saleable in the closing stages. Overall they could have been back about 2s to 3s on late rates.

Woolly hoggets sold to 70s Id from T. L. Perry (Rakaia) and sales at 69s Id were made by Clarkson Bros. (Mt. Hutt) and J. F. Brown (Greenpark). P. H. FAT SHEEP Values for fat sheep were from firm to better. The yarding was 3944 head, compared with 3234 last week. Quality was fairly good, with a fair proportion ot good shorn sheep among the wethers, and a fair number ot big, heavily woolled sheep in the ewe section. For ewes the market showed a firming tendency, particularly for the pens ot heavy, wellwoolled sheep, but in the closing stages of the sale values eased back to last week's rates. Better class two and fourtooth wethers were also a little dearer, but plain sheep of this age group did not show much movement, and older wethers remained about steady, with heavy and indifferent quality being again difficult to sell. Wethers sold to 66s Id for the tops of a line received from the estate R. J. Philpott and Sons (Okuku). H. R. Watson (Rakaia) reached to 66s Id for four out of a line of 30 which ranged from 64s Id. FAT CATTLE The fat cattle entry at 351 head, compared with 451 last week, still included too many heavy and over-fat cattle and only a limited selection of handy-weight animals suitable for the requirements of the trade. This had a depressing effect on the market The very heavy cattle constitute something of a problem to dispose of, and are only acceptable to the butchers at a comparatively low rate per 1001 b. Heavy steers were from par to a shade easier than last week, while medium-weight cattle were at least firm and possibly a shade dearer. Med-ium-weight heifers held to late rates, but over-fat sorts were up to 30s cheaper. Cows were generally steady. Steers made to £49 7s 6d for one from Sullivan Bros. (Fox Glacier). The estate R. O. Bradley (Charteris Bay) realised to £47 17s 6d for one,. and two in the same line realised £46 17s 6d. The eight cattle from the estate averaged £46 9s. Sales at £46 17s 6d were made by L. R. Forrester (Karetu) for two, and by A. T. M Thacker (Okains Bay). The top price for heifers was £3l 12s 6d received by C. A McKenzie (Anama) for two. and by A. T. M. Thacker. H. T. J. With spring at hand, there was some interest in the odd pen of useful cattle included in the small selection of 137 store cattle, compared with 193 last week. Compared with fat values prices looked to be very good.

Two-year Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus cross steers from J. D. F. Fleming realised to £3l Is, with other steers in this age group ranging from £25 13s 6d. Dalgety and New Zealand Loan, Ltd., sold: on account of J. D. F. Fleming (Cheviot). 20 Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus-Hereford cross two-year-old ateers at £27 3s 6d to £3l Is.

National Mortgage and Agency Company. Ltd., and H. Matson and Company, sold: on account of North Canterbury client, 30 two-year-old Aberdeen Angus cross Meers, at £9B

13s 6d to £27 8s 6d; R. B. Maw (Rakaia), 5 Shorthorn sieeis at £29 8S 6d. BULLS The bull entry comprised 16 head, compared with 14 last week, and was made up mainly of medium-weight cattle. The market was topped by a big Shorthorn which made £5B 17s 6d, and a Friesian sold at £44 17s 6d. Otherwise mediumweight cattle made from £3O 7s 6d to £3B 17s 6d. and light from £2O 7s 6d to £29 17s 6d. DAIRY CATTLE The selection of dairy cattle totalled about 45 head. Except tor a line of advertised quality Friesian cross cows the sale was not a very spirited one for cows, but values were still similar to those of last week. The advertised cattle, numbering eight, were from second to fifth calvers. They made from £27 to £3B. and averaged £32 10s. Apart from these cattle best cows realised from £29 to £35. with medium at £23 to £2B. and others down to £lB. The few Jersey cows were hard to sell, and made reduced prices. They brought from £l4 to £26. Two good quality Friesian heifers made £44 and £5O respectively. Outside these the heifer entry comprised secondary quality cattle, which made from £24 to £3O. VEALERS The veal entry was between 150 and 200 head. Too many plain type cattle were included and some of these had to be transferred to the store pens. For the best of the cattle the market was similar to last week, but runners tended to be easier by up to 10s a head, and secondary-quality cattle were: on a par to a shade easier. I Best large runners made from £27 2s 6d to £3O 2s 6cf medium runners from £23 7s 6d to £26 7s 6d. and smaller runners from £2O 2s 6d to £22 12s 6d: best suckers £l9 7s 6d to £22 2s 6d, medium suckers £l6 2s 6d to £lB 7s 6d, and smaller suckers £l2 2s 6d to £l4 12s 6d: best calves. £l4 12s 6d to £l6 12s 6d; medium calves, £ll 7s 6d to £l3 12s 6d: smaller calves. £7 2s 6d to £9 2s 6d; and bobby calves from 48s 6d. FAT PIGS The porker entry was similar to that of last week, but again quality was lacking. Best quality medium-weights met quite good competition, but farmers are still inclined to be making their pigs a little too heavy for the trade, and this class of pig showed little difference in value to the medium-weights. The chopper entry was a large one and competition was again keen with best pigs making from £l6 8s 6d to £l9 Is. The small entry of baconers met medium competition with little change in values. Values were:— Light and unfinished porkers. £5 9s 6d to £6 19s 6d. Medium porkers, £7 12s 6d to £8 9s 6d Heavy porkers, £8 7s 6d to £9 2s 6d. Choppers, £ll Ils to £l9 Is. Light and medium baconers, £lO Is 6d to £ll 9s 6d. Heavy baconers, £l2 4s 6d to £l3 0s 6d. STORE PIGS Entries in the store pig section were much larger, and quality was a little better. The attendance of buyers was about the same as last week, and although the sale opened on a quiet note, it improved as it progressed and finished fully firm on last week. There was a large entry of in-pig sows and sows with litters. The sale was a dragging one with values easier by £2 to £3. In-pig sows made from £lO to £2O. and sows with litters of five to 11. made £lB to £3O. Values were:— Small weaners, 45s to 60s. Best weaners, 65s to 80s.

Slips, Bls to 88s. Small and medium stores, 90s to 100 s.

Large stores, £5 10s to £8 10s.
