Rebuilding In New Brighton
Part of New Brighton’s central shopping centre was closed to pedestrians yesterday while an old building on the south side of Seaview road, two blocks from the sea front, leant on the verge of collapse The building, about 70 years old. which once housed an ice-cream shop, a hairdresser's shop, a book shop a delicatessen shop, and a billiards parlour, was being demolished to make way for a Woolworths supermarket Next door, on a site already cleared. a single-storeyed building will be out up for the Commercial Bank Timbers on the street frontage of the old block of shops bowed yesterday morning as workmen knocked away bricks from the back Because of the nearness of the road, much of the work has had to be done by hand and last evening only the top storey of the building had been removed The two bulldozers on the job will be used more on the lower portion today Mr J Cameron, in charge of the operations, said yesterday that the construction was particularly solid The foundations were about sft deep and their destruction would tax even the heavy machines Work would continue for some days, he said
