SCHOOL HOSTEL MATRONS

First South Island Conference

Nearly 40 matrons of school hostels, youth hostels and children’s homes from most parts of New Zealand are attending a conference at Rangi-ruru School this week. It is being held to help matrons in their work, by holding discussions and hearing addresses by specialists on different aspects of their duties.

The programme includes talks on food buying and handling, diet, psychology, health in hostels, interior decoration. floral arrangement and maintenance of hostels. Visits have been arranged to the Christchurch Sheltered Workshop. Canterbury Agricultural College and Christ’s College. The conference, which is organised by the Association of Heads of Independent Schools, is the first to be held in the South Island. At the end of the course- certificates will be presented to those attending by Mr H. R. Hornsby, the president of the association and headmaster of Christ’s College.
