VISIT BY BIG JET

Boeing Due Next Month A military veraion at the Boeing 787 will land at Christehareh alryort early on September IL It will reman at Harewood for about 48 hows before returning to the United States. Aboard the aircraft will be Major-General W. P. Fisher, commanding officer. Eastern Air Force, of the Military Air Transport Service and 61 passengers who will stay at Harewood for United States Antarctic activities. The news that the Boeing would come to Christchurch was released yesterday after approval for it to land had been given by the Director of Civil Aviation. It is believed the aircraft is making a route survey to evaluate the possibility of its future use as a transport aircraft in support of United States Antarctic activities and as a possible replacement for the DC6 aircraft used at present.

It is not expected that the Boeing will take part in thia year’s Antarctic activities. The airport manager (Mr A. I. R. Jamieson) said yesterday that the Boeing would be the first to land at Harewood.

Mr Jamieson said he hoped that while it was here the Boeing would be open for public inspection. When it leaves Harewood at 7.30 a.m. on September 13 the aircraft will take back only Major-General Fisher and his immediate staff.
