POST OFFICE EVACUATED

False Alarm Of Fire

Christchurch was without toll services for about 15 minutes yesterday afternoon when an automatic fire alarm on the fourth floor of the Post Office building went off about 4 p.m, causing the building to be evacuated About 200 employees, comprising the staffs of the Savings Bank, the telephone and toll branches, and the engineering division left the building, which was cleared in about five minutes.

The Regional Engineer of the Post Office (Mr L. D. Bewley), who was in charge of the evacuation, said that although it was not the usual practice to clear the building when an alarm bell sounded there had been some doubt as to the cause of the alarm, and ft was thought safer to get the staff out.
