“FIRE” CALL IN THEATRE
Stampede By Children (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, August 21. Children stampeded out of the Majestic Theatre, Oamaru', this afternoon after a shout of "fire” from the auditorium Some of those present at the matinee screening said they smelt smoke when the film had about half an hour left to run. The theatre had been reopened for less than a fortnight. It was. severely damaged by fire some months ago and renovations had just been completed. There was no danger of fire this time, and managerial staff in the front of the house tried to persuade the children to return.
The film was kept running the whole time. A large proportion of the audience returned, but many did not stay to see the rest of the film. It was the second day of the school holidays and the audience was mainly composed of school childrenSome mothers had to take hysterical children home. The manager of the theatre, Mr R. Horsburgh, said later the alarm had been raised for no cause. “There was absolutely no danger,” he said.
