“Uninformed” Comment On Outward Bound
“It is regrettable that Cr V G Spiller, a member of the Riccarton Borough Council. should make such an uninformed comment on the aims of Outward Bound.” said Mr C R Harman, public relations officer for Outward Bound in Christchurch, yesterday Mr Harman was commenting on a statement by Cr Spiller at a meeting of the Riccarton Borough Council on Monday evening in which he said that the Outward Bound movement had got out of hand Commenting on Cr. Spiller’s remark that young men were outward bounding every week, hiking and climbing mountains. Mr Harman said that the Outward Bound camp would provide disciplined facilities for those who wished to carry out these efforts
Furthermore, there were many, probably the majority of New Zealanders, who did not take physical education at the week-ends. Mr Harman said that Outward Bound's primary aim was to train young men to gain confidence and a spirit of adventure and to discover latent potential for leadership. Another aim was ;to
increase the power of physical endurance away from the limiting factors of every-day environment.
On Cr. Spiller's statement that it would cost £4O tor a boy to be put up for a month at the camp, Mr Harman said that the £4O covered the full course and the return fare of the youth from any part of the country; also it included the use of equipment provided Mr Harman added that the Outward Bound movement in Australia had started with one school in New South Wales in 1959 It had proved so popular that schools were now being started in the other five States.
