LAWN TENNIS Junior Tournament Has 170 Players
More than 170 young tennis players thronged Wilding Park yesterday when the annual August holiday tournament fur juniors began Previously conducted by a sports goods firm, the touma- . ment is being run this yeai by the Canterbury Junior Lawn Tennis Association and by las evening most sections were well ahead. The use of courts at the Avonside and Linwood clubs helped progress. The tournament will continue tomorrow and will end on either Wednesday or Thursday. In the main singles sections under 19 this year instead of under 18 as in previous seasons some of the seeded players were eliminated in yesterday’s early rounds. J. Cullington, one of the provinces most prominent juniors in recent years, seeded first, and R. McCutcheon, a Slazenger shield player, seeded third, have reached the semifinals of the under 19 boys’ singles. Last year’s winner of the under 18 singles, W. Edgecumbe, if Lincoln. seeded second, has vet to play his quarter-final, but the fourth seed. A. Gowans, was beaten by L. E. Vallance. a Linwood High Schoo) pupil. Two of the top four seeded players went out of the under 19 girls’ singles. L.
