SUBJECTS OF ATTACKS
London Prison Officers
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) LONDON. August 20.
The families of 25 prison officers were placed under immediate police protection last night, after a bomb attack on one warder’s home —the latest in a series of attacks on the staff of a London prison.
The 25 officers were marked men in an underworld terror campaign against the warders of Pentonville Gaol, in north London, the ‘‘Daily Mail” reported. Police squads patrolled through the night, as detectives called on former prisoners with reputations for trouble-making, recently discharged from the prison.
The latest attack occurred on Saturday, when a petrol bomb was hurled through the bedroom window of the prison officer, Mr Maurice Brice. Mr Brice and his wife were away and the fire was put out by colleagues living nearby, aided by firemen. Three weeks ago a petrol bomb was thrown into the home of the deputy-gover-nor. Mr F. W. SatchweU. shortly after an anonymous threatening letter was received.
Other incidents in the terror campaign have included the Chicago-style attempts on the lives of three officers, who narrowly missed being run down by cars in the street near their homes.
