Ambulance Dedicated For Use At Lyttelton

A new ambulance was dedicated by the St. John Ambulance Association at Lyttelton yesterday afternoon to the memory of Mr W. Miller, .secretary of the port sub-centre for 20 years. The ambulance, which cost £2BOO. was dedicated by the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt Rev. A. K. Warren), who is a sub-prelate of the Order of St. John, at a ceremony at the Lyttelton Main School attended by 400 people. It replaces one used for 28 years and driven often by Mr Miller.

Many tributes were made by speakers to Mr Miller's unselfish service to the St. John Ambulance Association and to other humanitarian causes in Lyttelton. After an inspection of the Lyttelton ambulance and nursing division by the chairman of the Canterbury-West Coast Centre (Mr W. A. McAllister), the ambulance was handed over to him by the chairman of the Lyttelton sub-centre, (Mr F. G. Briggs)

The Commissioner of the Brigade (Lieutenant-Colonel G. L. Falck) presented two Lyttelton members with medals. Mr F. A. G. Dawson received a 12-year medal and Miss F. Sneddon received a second bar to her silver medal. Mr Miller, who died in 1960. was the Lyttelton representative of “The Press’’ for 40 years. Two years before his death, he was admitted to the Order of St. John as a serving brother in recognition of his work.

He was the last secretaryorganiser of the popular Lyttelton regatta which, at one time, was Canterbury’s leading aquatic event.

Mr Miller’s five sons and four daughters were present at the service.
