Council Divided On Trust Membership
A subscription by the Waimairi County Council to the Freedom-from-Hunger Campaign would be of more use than life membership of the Outward Bound Trust, which provided a leadership course
“for the few." said Cr. W. T Rice when the council met last evening. Cr. Rice opposed a committee recommendation that the council become a life member of the trust at a cost of £lOO. and moved an amendment that it pay yearly subscription to the trust of £2 2s a year. Cr. W. E. Cassidy seconded the amendment. In thanks to the GovernorGeneral (Lord Cobham), who was directly associated with the Outward Bound Trust, and was about to leave the Dominion, the council had been asked to consider a donation to the appeal “to mark the occasion in a manner the Governor - General would appreciate.” said a committee note.
Cr. Rice said it was "not without careful thought” that he opposed the recommendation It was time people faced the realities of the overseas’ situation, he said —a subscription to the Freedom--
from-Hunger Campaign would be more useful than life membership of Outward Bound.
Cr. H. J. Reynolds agreed that the Freedom-from-Hunger Campaign was a worthy cause, but said that from a leadership course could come forward a leader "who would solve the problem of hunger.” He was supported by Cr C. L. Austin, who said that the Outward Bound Trust was an extension of education. “I support the movement wholeheartedly.” said Cr. A. R. Blank. “It’s one of the finest movements to come to New Zealanders and I speak as an educationist.”
The movement could produce ‘'young Cobhams” from the young people—‘‘those are the chaps we want, people like the Governor-General.” he said.
The chairman (Mr J. I. Colligan) said he thought the question was one of making a substantial contribution at an early stage “f r a worthy cause.”
When put to the vote. Cr Rice’s amendment was lost, and the recommendation adopted.
