FIRE DAMAGES COBDEN HOTEL

Good Save Made By Brigades A fire in the early hours' of yesterday morning" caused; a good deal of damage to the; rear wall of the Cobden! Hotel. The Cobden and; Greymoutih fire brigades were I summoned about half an hour| after midnight and they made; a good save. The fire had a good hold' when the brigades arrived.! It had apparently started I through a faulty chimney ini the rear corner of the build-! ing. as it was in that quar-j ‘.er that the damage was most! extensive. The firemen had to hack! through the western wall to! get at the seat of the fire. 1 which proved difficult to; bring under control. Water) caused some damage in addition to the blaze. The heati melted portion of the rubberised floor covering in thei bar.

The only occupants of the! building were the licensee., Mr G. Stanbridge, his wife' and their son-in-law, daughter and three children. Mr Stanbridge said later that he could not give an accurate estimate of the damage, but he thought repairs to the building would cost something like £2500. He said the whole rear wall would have to be demolished' and rebuilt. Four rooms in! the upstairs portion would 1 have to be extensively reno-' vated and repainted, while i some chattels would have to > be replaced.
