NEW BUSH AREA TO BE OPENED

Tenders Called For Timber Purchase The opening up of an area of 380 acres of bush land in the Brighton survey district, through Bullock creek, containing 343,610 cubic feet of timber, should lead to access being provided to a substantial acreage of good class farming land already partly developed. The New Zealand Forest Service is calling for tenders for the purchase of 306.200 cubic feet of rimu-miro. 34,400 feet of kahikatea. and much lesser quantities of matai and totara.

The successful tenderer will be expected to construct an access road to the bush stand and to farming land in the block, which is situated about three miles and a half from the Westport - Greymouth road near Punakaiki.

The Buller County Council has for some years endeavoured to have access provided through Bullock creek, or through the bush tract now being worked extensively by a Christchurch milling firm on the Porarari river end. However, all its efforts had been unsuccessful.

There is already a mile of formed road on the route to the timber block now to be opened, but then there is some rough country, including swamps and seven crossings of a small river, to negotiate.

There are some valuable pockets of dairying land on which stock has been grazed for some years past, but lack of good access has considerably hampered fanning operations. '
