“BITING AND KICKING”
Incidents In Rugby Match (N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, August 16. Events leading up to the ordering from the field of two players in a senior Rugby match last Saturday included “kneeing, biting and certain other tricks." W. Rowe, the Te Kawau hooker, told the judicial committee of the Manawatu Rugby Union tonight. Rowe said the illegal tactics took place in a club game between Te Kawau and Oroua at Kimbolton.
Appearing before the committee with Rowe was W. Geary, a prop for Oroua. Rowe admitted bringing his knee up into the opposing hooker’s face, but said he had done so only because of the biting and “other things.’’ Also before the committee were W. Anderson and W Webber and G Pike and P. Temperton—all Technical Old Boys—who were sent from the field at the Show Grounds oval. Palmerston North, on the same day. Rowe was suspended for two playing Saturdays. Geary was placed on the caution list, and Anderson, Pike. Webber and Temperton were suspended for one playing Saturday. After the hearings, the committee submitted to the union the following rider: “This committee feels there is regrettable evidence of a development of illegal tactics in the front rows of many senior teams. We suggest the union should issue a stern warning that those found guilty of illegal tactics will be dealt with severely.” The members of the judicial committee were Messrs H. A. Stone (chairman), R. L. Bond. G. A. Brown, L. Mullins. and Brother Aloysius.
