Forbury Spring Meeting

"The Press” Special Service DUNSDIN, August 15. The Forbury Park Trotting Chib will give £lOOO more in stakes than last year for the spring meeting in October. The faster class pacers will gain most, while the trotters will lose £2OO a night, a total of £4OO down on that given to those horses last October. A new race this year will be the City Free-for-all over 11 furlongs, on the second night. This will cater for the same horses as the Lightning Free-for-all at Addington this week. The stake for this event will be £llOO. The main event on the opening night will be the Metropolitan Handicap, over 13 furlongs for horses assessed at 3min 34sec and faster under invitation conditions. Horses assessed at 3min 35sec are invited to nominate. The stake will be £l3OO.

No stake at the meeting will be less than £4OO. There has been a revision of most events compared with last year. There has been a general tightening of the slower classes, but some events have been loosened, notably the main trotting race each night Last year these races were for 3min 44sec class trotters over 13 furlongs, with stakes of £BOO. This time the races are for 3min 47sec class horses with stakes of £650.

The Members’ Handicap on the opening night and the President’s Handicap on the second night will each carry stake money of £9OO. They are for horses assessed at 3min 37sec or faster for 13 furlongs. Last year this class was not catered for, the club running two 3min 39sec class events.

They also ran two 3min 35sec class races, allowing Patchwork to qualify for the New Zealand Cup by winning one of them. This year. cup qualifiers will have only the Metropolitan Handicap on the first night. A total of £ll,OOO will be given in stake money, £5500 each night. Last year £4950 was given on opening night and £5050 on the second night.
