Otago Likely Winner Of University Tournament

Otago University, twice winner of the New Zealand Universities’ winter tournament shield in the last three years, appears likely to gain the major honours in the 1962 contest now being held in Christchurch. At the end of the second day’s competition yesterday, Otago held excellent prospects of success in seven of the 14 contests, although Canterbury, with victories in two of the three sports completed, led in tournament shield points.

Canterbury retained its supremacy in ski-ing and smallbore rifle shooting to gain 16 points. Otago has 12, Auckland eight, and Victoria four. Otago’s successes yesterday were capped by the fine

win of its leading runner, R. P. Welsh, in the individual section of the cross-country championship, held over a muddy course at Hals well Welsh, who was third in the Otago title race last month and sixth in the New Zealand cha.mpicneh‘ip at Taradale last Saturday, confirmed this good form with a cleair-cut win from last year’s winner, R. Farmer {Canterbury). In badminton, Otago continued its run of victories by trouncing the previously, unbeaten Lincoln side, 15 matches to one. The South Island champion, Lee Tuck Chew (Otago), showed the way by beating the top Lincoln player. Ho Ya Yen, 15-6. 15-5. Otago Dominant But it was in golf that Otago's domination was most marked. Playing at the Templeton ’ Country Club. Otago’s players showed themselves to be completely superior, and the margin of 36 strokes between Otago and its nearest rival, Canterbury, reflected this superiority. The leading eight players, the top five of whom are from Otago—will play off today at Waitikiri for the individual title. The winner of the men’s indoor basketball title for the last three tournaments. Otago, edged but Auckland by one point after five • minutes’ extra. time had been played. It was the second time in the tourney that Auckland had been so beaten. Chief interest, however, lay in the Canterbury v. Victoria match. Victoria, enjoying complete domination of the back boards and playing fine, controlled basketball, won, 43-40 Canterbury adopted a tight zone defence, evidently to restrict the scoring chances of the outstanding Victoria player, J. Arden, but the lithe American showed his worth by scoring 19 points. P Betts, who was also to the fore in the Victoria side, scored 21.

Shooting Supremacy Canterbury had its best moments In smallbore rifle shooting and squash rackets, a sport not yet part of the official tournament programme. Can “. r ' burv has been beaten only twice in shooting since 1904 and yesterday its team showed the benefit of greater competttic e experience in retaining the I.L.i. Shield. One of its number. J Neale, a marksman of about eight years’ experience. shot consitsently well to record the best individual total. He recorded three possibles in the six rounds. . Canterbury beat Otago by two matches to one in the encounter between the two unbeaten squash rackets teams, and Canterbury s meeting with Massey this morning will virtually decide the competition. The best squash of the day was produced by the South Island representative. M. J. Simons (Otago) and the top Canterbury player, P. M. Hiu, Simons winning, 9-5, 10-8, 9-4. The Canterbury numbers two and three. R. Goodall and R Latham, easily accounted for their Otago opponents. Since 1954 Victoria had produced the leading fencing team at every winter tournament but one and this year should be no exception. It won the men s foil convincingly and was beaten on a count-back by five points 'ln the women's foil final against Canterbury Its top man, RPeterson. was clearly the best follist In the competition.

Although’ the genera! standard In the men’s foil was lower than usual, the women’s standard was higher, with three competitors—Misses J. Grieve (Canterbury), M. Riddo’ls 'Canterbury) and L. MacKemde (Victoria)—proving worthy of making a New Zealand championship final. Miss Grieve was the best of the trio in the teams' competition, but the other two were close behind. Fine Jumping

In the cross country event, Welsh’s jumping of the obstacles was a feature of the race. At the top of the hills the second time round, he surprised the spectators by leaping over a four-barred gate from a difficult, muddy takeoff.

R. Farmer (Canterbury). after disputing the lead with Welsh over the first two hills, was a clear second. A group of two Auckland and two Otago runners provided a good contest for the other placings. After changes of positions, the two Aucklanders, N. McDell and L. Walker. we;e ahead • of the

Otago men at the top of the hills the second time round, and held their advantage to the finish. Auckland and Otago tied in the teams’ event with 22 points each, but Auckland was awarded first place through its fourth runner finishing ahead of the fourth Otago man. Auckland regained the table tennis supremacy it had surrendered to Canterbury in 1961. winning the teams’ content by 11 matches to 8. The Canterbury team, hit by influenza, defaulted three of its matches. The shock result of the individual championships was the defeat of G W. A. Bush, a highly ranked player in Auckland, by R. B. McCallum (Canterbury). McCallum won, 21-15, in the fifth set, after the expedite rule had been used. At Coronet Peak, two Canterbury skiers, P. Willis and Miss K. Guy, were the outstanding competitors In men’s and women’s sections respectively. The weather was perfect, and snow conditions are excellent for the New Zealand Universities v. Australian Universities’ match. Reports favour the NewZealand team, but close competition is expectedResults were:— Harriers.—lndividual results: R. P. Welsh (Otago), 39:37, 1; R.
