ADDINGTON MARKET Values For Heavier Cattle Fall Sharply

With a predominance of over-fat and heavy cattle in the fat pens at Addington market yesterday, values dropped sharply for this class. Some of the over-fat cattle were cheaper by £5 to £6 a head, but the short supply of medium and light-weight heifers and steers sold at about late rates. Cows also held their values.

Fat sheep met an erratic sale, which opened on a weak note but picked up again to the best rates of last week. The hogget market was relatively sound, but there was less active, competition. Ewes and lambs were to hand in the store pens for jthe first time this season, but they soM at fairly modest rates, making to 28s to 29s 6d all counted for the best There was also a sizeable representation of shorn wether hoggets, which sold to about 40s,

STORE SHEEP The store sheep section included some of ute first ewes and lambs of the season. These were yarded in modest numbers and made what were considered to be fairly modest rates. There were also a number of pens of useful shorn wether hoggets in the entry which looked to be selling somewhat better than the woolly sheep The entry was about double the size of last week with the Increased entry of hoggets being responsible for this. The entry totalled 2006 compared with 912 last week and included 1381 hoggets (161 last week). 13 twotooth ewes (none last week), 397 older ewes (751), 142 ewes and lambs (none), and 75 wethers (none). . The hogget yarding included a number of pens of useful shorn hoggets, and also some ?ood woolly ewe hoggets. Useul shorn fine wool wether hoggets sold from 32s to 355. with average back to 28s. with the pick of the shorn Romneys and Romney cross selling at 37s to 42s 6d, with others ranging back to 34s Shorn Down cross hoggets realised from 34s to 365. FAT HOGGETS The fat hogget' entry was slightly bigger at 2187 head, compared with 2090 last week, but quality was slightly better, particularly among the heavier weights. This tended to mask a rather more quiet market in which bidding was not as free as last week and there was restricted competition from wholesale Interests for lighter weights. While there was only one pen at 70s last week, there were eight or nine pens yesterday which made from iOs Id to S2s Id and this top quality class was toe only one to show any animation in bidding. The market was topped by J. Gardiner (Rakala) with one at 82s Id and four at 74s Id. and an undisclosed vendor had a sale at 77s Id. A. W. Johnson (Kaiapoi) received 75s Id for three, and a pen of 15 from P. H. Letham (Dromore) realised 73s Id. An outstanding sale A shorn hoggets at 64s Id was made by C. G. Syme (Methven). Wethers opened on a weak note with the better mediumweight two-tooths easier by about 2s a head and other classes 3s to 4s a head cheaper, with sales of older sheep hard to make. By about the end of the fourth or fifth race the market began to firm and prune medium young wethers were in good demand. Older sheep were never buoyant at any stage but some good prices were paid for wethers carrying heavy fleeces. Ewes followed a similar pattern. For the first part of the sale there were few sales over 40s, but later prices were fully on a par with last week’s rates. Wether sales were headed by E. A. J. The fat cattle entry at 451 nead, which was about 60 head more than last week, was notable for the supply of big, heavy overfat and gross cattle with relatively few butchers’ quality cattle Included. The result was that for the overfat and heavier-weight cattle prices slumped sharply.

Some of the overfat steers declined in value by as much as £5 or £6, and they were difficult selling at these prices. On a per 1001 b basis these cattle were worth only about £4. Heavy-weight steers In general were cheaper by about £3 a nead while light and mediumweight steers of which there were few in the offering, held their values.

Heavy heifers also eased by up to 40s a head with lighter and medium-weight cattle on a par with late rates. Cow* sold mainly at rates comparable with the last sale.
