RECITAL OF MUSIC

There was a fairly large attendance at the University Hall for a recital given yesterday afternoon by students from Auckland University and Victoria University.

David Bollard’s pianoforte playing was admirable for flexible and secure control and for the production of beautiful tone. He phrases clearly and with intelligence, and shows understanding of style. Bach's Organ Prelude and Fugue in A minor was played with clarity and evenness of touch. Strong emotion was brought from Schoenberg’s second Prelude, and :he Brahms Intermezzo in B flat minor showed Mr Bollard’s ability to interpret a lyrical work with delicacy and feeling without becoming sentimental. He accompanied Dale Kingdom in Bozza’s Faatasie Italienne. Miss Kingdom's playing of the clarinet had expressive control and clear production of tone. She played most acceptably and with musical feeling. Joyce Collins, accompanied by Peter Oettl, played a Mozart rondo arranged by Kreisler. Her bowing is flexible, and in the cantabile sections she produced attractive tone. In the more vigorous parts of the work her intonation was faulty. Neville Baird played the Brahms Ballade in G minor. Much of his playing shows promise but lacks some measure of control and accuracy at present. Robin Maconie, from Wellington, also played, but another engagement unfortunately prevented the writer from hearing him. —C.F.B.
