METEORITE STORM

Bombardment Of Spaceships (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) WINNIPEG. August 13 The Soviet spaceships, Vcstok 111 and IV. were orbiting the earth during unusually heavy bombardments of the atmosphere by millions of small meteorites, the director of the Regina Observatory, Mr John Hodges, said today. In an interview with the Canadian Press. Mr Hodges who is a member of the National Research Council’s committee on meteors and meteorites, said the meteorites ranged in size from a grain of wheat to a small pea. They come from the constellation Perseus and have been named “Perseuds" by astronomers. They speed through space at 20 miles a second and are believed to have originated from a large comet that crossed the earth's orbit in 1862. he said. Scientists and astronomers were viewing with keen interest the outcome of the collision of Soviet space capsules with the meteorites Mr Hodges said he though; considerable pitting would occur on the outer face of the space capsules.
