FIREMEN’S FLATS
Objection To “Peep Holes”
"Peep holes” in the doors of the firemen’s quarters at the new central fire station should be covered over, the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board agreed last evening. No one knew why they had been installed.
Th_ board had agreed that the holes in the single men’s quarters should be covered, said Mr A. S. Hollander. It appeared that there were also peep holes in the front doors of the flats. “I can’t understand why they were put there and I trust the architect won’t put them anywhere else.” he added. “I would not have a clue.” commented the Chief Fire Officer (Mr L. R. Osmond' Mr W. E. Olds: I understand they . are institution doors.
Mr Hollander: Weii. they shouldn’t be in the fire station.
“I don’t know why they are there,” said the chairman 'Mr W. R. Campbell). "Anyone who wants them closed in should have it done,” said Mr Olds, and other board members agreed with him.
One other aspect of the design of the new station was mentioned by Mr Hollander —the use of poles in the quarters—and Mr Osmond was quick to challenge anyone to beat him to the ground floor by using the stairs while he used a pole. “I have £lOO to say 1 will be at the bottom before he is,” Mr Osmond said. ifo one accepted the offer, although Mr Olds was urged to do so by some of his fellow ’-■O3 rd members.
