Common Market
Sir, —You cannot iron a shirt unless you get your seams right. You cannot discuss the Common Market unless you have your facts right Everyone in New Zealand seems to be at sixes and sevens over trends which are creating another giant industrial power. In fact we have the prospect of an America in the West of Europe When you look at the new Community as a whole, it already has a gross national product of more than half that >f the United States. The gross national product of the Common Market is already about 260 billion dollars, and this area is also one of the main producers of food. In fact, it produces now more steel automobiles, and manufactured goods than another giant. Russia Between 1949 and 1958 the industrial production of the Community increased 97 per cent., while the United States lagged behind with 39 per cent and Britain only 29 oer cent — Yours, etc., RALPH S WHEELER Timaru.
