SWIMMING Five World Records Broken In U.S.

(NJS. Press Association—Copyright) CTTYAHOGA FALLS (Ohio). August 13. Five world swimming records were broken and one was tied in the United States national Amateur Athletics Union outdoor championships which ended its three-day meeting yesterday.

Eight American records fell, another w-as tied and 10 meeting marks were eclipsed. The Australian Olympic swimmer. M. Rose, aged 23. broke two American records —the 1500 metres and 400 metres freestyle. His fellow Australian. Jon Konrads, wiho holds all of the world records for the standard distances from 220 yards to the mile and the 1500 metres freestyle failed to qualify in preliminary heats on any of the three days. The visiting Japanese. West German and Canadian teams did not score a win. Rose was the only foreigner to win but he competed for the Los Angeles Amateur Swimming Club. The new American marks set by Rose were the 400 metre freesytle in 4min 17.2 sec to better the previous mark of 4min 17.5 sec and the

1500 metre freestyle. 17min 16.7 sec (17min 21.8 sec). World records bettered at the meeting were:— 200 Metres Backstroke.—T. Stock (Indianapolis), 2min 10.9 sec. Previous record 2min 11.5 sec. 100 Metres Backstroke.—T. Stock (Indianapolis), Imin Isec. (Imiin I.3sec.) 400 Metres Individual Medley.—T. Stuckies (Indianapolis). 4min 51.5 sec. (4min 55.65ec.) 200 Metre Butterfly.—C. Robie (Phdladelpihiia), 2min 10.8 sec. (2min 12.fcec.) 400 Metres Medley Relay.— Indianapolis Athletic Club’s B team (T. Stock, C. Jastremski, F. Schmidt and P. Sintz), 4m in i.6sec. (4miin 3sec.) The 200 metres freestyle was equalled by D. Schollander (California), 2min 4sec.
