ART STUDY OVERSEAS
Chances For Youth (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 13. New Zealand would develop into an artistic backwater unless young people were given the opportunity to study art overseas, said Sir Jack Harris at the opening today of the North Island exhibition of secondary school art. The exhibition is being sponsored by a firm in cooperation with the arts and crafts branch of the Education Department. “I think it a great pity that the art council has re« cently decided not to grant any further overseas art scholarships.” said Sir Jack Harris. “This exhibition shows there is sufficient talent among our young people to make selection of them for overseas training well worth while.” He expressed pleasure at the considerable number of pictures entered by Maori children. Many of the pictures showed some distinctive and individual talent. “I feel sure there is a great field for encouraging the artistic talent of the Maori people who have an instinctive feeling for colour in art.” said Sir Jack Harris. The Minister of Education (Mr Tennent), who officially opened the exhibition, noted that the teacher of the children who won the firs" and second prizes was of Maori descent.
