POTATOES FOR N.I.

Trial Shipment In Aramoana A special train of about: 25 wa.ggc.ns will be sent this) evening, from Christchurch to Picton with potatoes for the! North Island. They will be! shipped by the rail ferry Ara-1 moana. It is hoped this ship-) ment will show it is easier: and less damaging to send] potatoes to the North Island by this method than by the, usual railage to Lyttelton and' coastal shipping. More than 2500 sacks of store-graded and specjallypacked potatoes have been prepared by Pyne. Gould.' Guinness Ltd. and will be loaded this afternoon into several types of railway waggon, using different methods of stowage. The waggoqs will be railed’ to Auckland. Whangarei, Tauranga, Hamilton, and Wei-.' lington. A representative of, the firm, local growers, and) the executive officer of the Potato Board <Mr M. P H ) Roustem) will also travel with the consignment on the ship to study this method of shipping. A spokesman for the firm said yesterday that the freight charges involved by, rail shipping from Lyttelton to the northern half of the North Island did not compare with usual charges for railage and coastal shipping, but for the southern half of. the North Island shipping by the Aramoana was cheaper, particularly for inland towns.
