N.Z. RUGBY LEAGUE ACHIEVEMENT

Third Win Of Series In 55 Years

(A Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, August 12.

The New Zealand Rugby League team on Saturday overwhelmed the touring English side, 27-8, to win its second successive test match before th£ second biggest crowd to attend Carlaw Park.

This victory gave the Kiwis the series, 2-0. the first time they have won a series against England since 1950. New Zealand won the first test on July 28, 19-0. It is only the third time in 55 years that New Zealand has beaten England in a test series.

With their forwards in dynamic form, the Kiwis outplayed what was claimed to be one of the best sets of forwards to leave England. Weakened by loss of players because of injuries and fielding only 11 fit men. the EngUsnmen did not look like a match-winning combination and had no answer to the low tackling of the Kiwi forwards. The teams were:— England.—G. Round; W. Boston. L. Gilfedder. N. Fox. P. Small: D. Bolton; H. Poyn. ton: D. Turner (captain); B. Edgar. R Huddart; B. McTigue, J. Shaw, J. Wilkinson. New Zealand. — J. E. Fagan; N. Denton. R. W. Bailey, G M. Kennedy. B. T. Reidy; J. Bond: W. L. Snowden; M. L. Cooke (captain): R. D. Hammond. A. C. Ackland; H. K. Emery, R. J. Butterfield, S. Edwards. Except for two or three isolated clashes the game was played hard but cleanly. The English captain. Turner, and Denton struggled on the stand as the game continued

ground in front of the granddown the field, but no pun, hes were exchanged. The New Zealand hooker, Butterfield, staggered out of a scrum late in the second half bleeding from the mouth and nose and Turner was warned: Players swapped jerseys and shook hands enthusiastically when the final bell rang. The hardest working player on the field was the Kiwi captain, Cooke, who backed up with amazing speed and tackled tirelessly. All of the New Zealand 'orwards played well, with Ackland and Hammond outstanding on defence. In the backs Snowden and Reidy were the pick. Both had good days and overshadowed their opposites. In the English forwards. Huddart stood out. His straight, crashing runs severely tested the New Zealand defence but he had too few opportunities to use his weight Wilkinson and McTigue worked honestly but received little support. In the backs the centre, Gilfedder, had plenty of room to work in and was the only tourist who looked like making a break.

The game was hard and fast and the handling of both sides was exceptionally good. The ground was firm except for the grandstand sideline which was muddy and slippery. Attempt At Goal The full-back. Fagan, missed an opportunity to open the scoring after two minutes when he had an attempt at goal from 40 yards out on the sideline. Three minutes later Reidy was given an overlap from a play-the-ball movement and raced over in the corner. Fagan missed the conversion.

Three minutes later Reidy was again given a clear run after Edwards had dropped •he ball but Reidy recovered it again and handed to Bailey who was caught from behind. Emery received the ball and after being tackled tapped the ball forward over the English goal-line to score Fagan missed his third attempt at goal. England received the ball for the first time after nine minutes of play. It was NeuZealand again when J. Bond made a run from his own 25 yard line and handed to Fagan. Fagan had Cooke inside him with an open field but tried to throw a high pass tc Reidy on the wing but B Hon took an interception and a certain try was lost. Denton missed a penalty attempt 30 cards out on the sideline and England missed a scoring chance when Gilfedder dropped the ball with the line clear and Boston outside him The five-eighths. Poynton. gave Gilfedder a chance to put Boston in the clear. Boston received the ball and barged down the sideline to touch down, but England was called back for a forward pass. Butterfield reeled from a scrum and the referee chatted to the English cap'ain. Turner. Wilkinson walked up and took the blame for the incident. Fagan added a goal near the end of the half and New Zealand led 8-0 at half-time Fagan added a further oen-

alty at the beginning of the second half when Wilkinson was penalised in a play-the-ball in front of the posts. English registered its first points when Fox scored after a beautiful 50-yard run. He failed to convert. Bailey ducked under a high tackle by Fox and raced over for New Zealand's third try with Denton in support. Fagan converted. Fagan added two more penalty goals to give the unassailable lead, 19-3. Two tries, one by Bailey and one by Denton within one minute, both converted by Fagan, brought the New Zealand total to 27-3 within 10 minutes to play. Small scored after an English attacking move and Gilfedder converted to make the final score, 27-8.
