SCOUTS FOR ANTARCTIC
Nomination Of Three Nominations for the three Canterbury Queen’s Scouts to face final selection for the group of three New Zealand scouts to visit Antarctica at the end of the year were considered on Saturday. The Canterbury nominees are Darrell John Blackwell and Campbell Mansfield Hope, of the Wigram Air Scouts group, and Lindsay George Johnston, of the Sheffield group. Eleven scouts sponsored by their district commissioners presented themselves for interview. The selections were made by the Canterbury Scout Commissioner (Mr C. W. Hamann), the secretary of the Canterbury Bov Scouts’ Association (Mr I. G Reynolds) and Mr M. F Rogers, a New Zealand field commissioner. The final selection will be made by the Dominion executive at the end of August. Announcing the committee’s selection, Mr Hamann said the standard of candidates generally was very high. "Indeed, the qualities of character shown by all the lads were an encouragement to the countless scouters and lay people who gave their time and efforts to help develop, through scouting. sound, reliable and honest citizens.” said Mr Hamann.
Last summer two of the three New’ Zealand Scouts to go to the .Antarctic were selected from Canterbury ’On the standing of oiir three nominees this year we might confidently hope to fill the New Zealand team,” Mr Hamann said.
