TWIST BEAT HYMNS
Special Youth Service (N.Z. Press Association > AUCKLAND. Augu c t 12 The rafters of the Methodist Central Mission Hall in Airdale _ street. Auckland, rang this afternoon as about 220 young persons sang hymns in strictly modern tempo. Led by a dance orchestra they shouted out "Onward Christian Soldiers” to the twist beat, and clapped their hands and stamped their feet It was the first of a series of special services designed to bring youth of the city into church. From the way they demanded more after the'benediction the services are going to be popular. Half an hour after the service ended they were still singing and clapping. The youthful band and song leader was Laurie Hamilton, who led his band at one of the Mission’s dances some time ago. The service was advertised and the hall was so crowded in response that extra seating had to be provided. “We thought this might b? one way to get the y -uth here.” said the Rev. S J Snind'er. who organised the service. The congregation was invited to let itself go. “This is to be a har-pv service." 'houted Mr Hamilton from hes rostrum. “Stamp ycur feet and sing ycur loudest—enjoy yourselves"
