Canada Goom* Drive

Sir.—Are not these goose drives illegal? The gazetted shooting season for goose, a protected bird in the Lake Ellesmere area, closed on July 31. Can another season, even for a day. be granted now without first gazetting a regulation to cover it? If the Minister of Internal Affairs can do this sort of thing at sweet will it seems to me that it is time his wings were clipped. Since I started to write this note I have had a telephone call from a woman whose family holds one of the largest properties on the lake shores north of 1 the Selwyn river. Obviously 'distressed, the woman expressed profound disgust over the goose drives and said | that they could not be justified on any ground whatever, , especially in the breeding season. The property concerned harbours as targe an accumulation of game, including geese, as any other at the lake. So much for the pot-hunter's claim that the drives had been planned with the one big idea of reducing numbers. —Yours, etc.. HONKER. August 10. 1962:

Sir. —Has anyone given a thought to the wives of these trigger-happy men? The first morning of my [arrival at a so-called farm, the Digger, not having had I enough of shooting the GerImans in the first war. went off for a shot. Away all day. he came back with a big stinking eel. No Germans ! around. When my son was 113. he was given a gun. dragged out of bed Saturdays and Sundays at 5 a m. to go ] for a shot, returning at 7 p.m. having tramped through l other men's properties. The ] Lad failed two examinations because he followed dad's instructions and not mother’s.
