LONG BEACH (California), August 10. Beautiful girls from 53 nations arrived here yesterday for the opening of the 1962 international beauty congress, which will end with the selection of “Miss World” on the night of August 18. The girls were dressed in native costumes and they made a delightful blaze of colour as they alighted from their aircraft. New Zealand’s Maureen Kingi and Australia’s Tania Verstak, aged 21, are among entrants in the congress. Tomorrow the contestants will visit the port of Long Beach and will appear in the City Centre for International Day. The traditional congress parade will be held on Sunday afternoon on Ocean Boulevard, with each contestant riding on her own float. Preliminaty titles to be decided will include the most popular girl in the parade, the most photogenic girl, and
“Miss Friendship”—the latter to be chosen by the competitors themselves. The beauty judging will begin next Wednesday and by Friday night the 15 finalists will have been selected. On Saturday night that number will be narrowed to five, from which will come the queen and her four runners-up. Nations represented in the congress are: Argentina, Australia. Austria. Belgium, Bolivia, Borneo, British Guiana, Brazil, Canada, Ceylon, China, Columbia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, England, France, Finland, Germany, Greece, Haiti, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Korea. Lebanon, Liberia, Luxembourg, Malaya, Morocco, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama.
