Field Service Scholars To Meet At Airport
More than 100 students from four countries who hold American Field Service scholarships will meet at the Christchurch airport on August 18. They will be New Zealand students returning from America, American students returning to America from New Zealand, and New Zealand, Australian, and Philippines students going to America.
The students returning to New Zealand will arrive in a Super Constellation of the Flying Tiger Line at 4.45 p.m. on August 18. The plane will also carry about 45 Australian students and six Philippines students. After they are officially welcomed, the plane will take back American students and 29 New Zealand students who are to take up their scholarships in America. The Christchurch branch of the American Field Service has arranged an official welcome for the students, as well as social functions for departing students who will be staying in Christchurch on August 17 and 18.
The American students leaving for America will be entertained at St. Luke’s Church Hall, Manchester street, on August 18. In the morning there will be a dis-
cussion on the benefits they have received from their six-month stay in New Zealand, and in the evening a social gathering will be held.
Included in the official party to welcome and sayfarewell to the students will be the Mayor (Mr G. Manning), Mr H. J. Walker, member of Parliament for St. Albans, and Mr T. Archer, regional superintendent of the Education Department. To cope with the crowd expected at the airport when the Super Constellation arrives the National Airways Corporation has made available No. 2 hangar for the official function.
