ILMENITE SCHEME
No Govt. Action (Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 10. The Government is taking no action on the proposals of the Blue Tasman syndicate's scheme for processing the ilmenite sands on the West Coast until the group has substantiated its financial position and the practicability of its intentions. The Minister of Mines (Mr Shand), who met the spokesman for the syndicate (Mr N. Owens) this morning said later he had not seen Mr Owens before and no formal application had yet been made to him for support. It is understood that the syndicate will have to establish the bona tides of its scheme, its knowledge of the industry, and its financial backing before any support can be given. The evidence of its purposes and ability to establish an industry will have to be produced before its claims to ilmenite sands on the beach south of Westport can be approved. Mr Owens announced the intentions of the syndicate to promote a £1 million company to produce titanium dioxide from the West Coast sands.
