AIDING THE POLICE

Compensation Approved (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 10. Cabinet has approved payment of compensation for people injured or killed in aiding the police. It will apply in cases of temporary incapacity, permanent disability or death. Compensation will be similar to that already authorised for persons assisting in search and rescue operations, the Minister of Police (Mr Eyre) announced tonight. He said payments would be made in accordance with the Workers’ Compensation Act Compensation would also be paid for damage to personal effects. Each case would be decided on its merits. Mr Eyre said that when people suffered financial loss by helping the police in their work compensation had always been paid from public funds regardless of whether there was a legal right to payment. However, there had never been any rule extending this beyond financial loss.
