WOMEN STOP SURVEY

New Britain Subdivision

(N.Z.P.A -Reuter—Copyright) RABAUL (New Britain), Aug. 10 Native women nursing babies today slopped a Government survey on Matupi Island, off Rabaul. The Government has been surveying the island for subdivision for building lots, a pre-school centre and community centre for natives.

Maiupi natives have contested the legality of the boundaries and for six months have resisted survey attempts. Today, surveyors, who had prepared holes for the erection of cement dumpies, found each hole occupied by a native woman nursing a child. About 100 natives spent this morning arguing with three surveyors, including the Lands and Survey Department head, Mr Bruce Sharp. The surveyors called for police assistance, but after further wrangling, Mr Sharp, the surveyors and police left the site.
