HIGH SCHOOLS’ TOURNEY
Kaikorai Valley And Riccarton
Rlccarton High School won four and drew one of the matches in the annual sports fixture with Kaikorai Valiev High School yesterday. With the exception of the girls' hockey match all games were evenly contested. Played in conjunction with the tournament was a hockey match between Waitaki Boys’ High Schoo! and Riccarton. This was the first occasion that a hockey match had been played between the two schools. The event is to become an annual fixture.
The Rugby match was scrappy. Riccarton won 8-3. and two very tired teams played out the Anal stages. Kaikorai scored first when A Coughlan kicked a beautiful penalty goal, but Riccarton took the lead late in the first spell when A. Davies scored a fine try for M. Carson to convert. There was no further scoring until the last minute of play, when I. Harris crossed in the corner, and was taken to hospital for his effort. Harris opened a scar on his forehead.
The soccer match was another hard fought battle, in which Kaikorai held the initiative for the greater part. The Anal score, 2-2. was perhaps a tittle flattering to Riccarton. for Kaikorai displayed far greater ball control and held a territorial advantage. Scorers for Riccarton were A. Kennard and C. Jones. C. Rennie scored twice for Kaikorai. Kaikorai rallied well to make up a fouregoal deficit in the senior basketball match, but Riccarton held its lead to win 24-23. Ka’korai settled down in the second half, and with S McDonald playing a fine game at centre, extended Riccarton to toe full. The B game was won by Riccarton. 26-17. Playing a short passing game, toe Riccarton girls' hockey team beat Kaikorai bv 8 goals to 0 Riccarton was vastly superior Riccarton attempted to play toe short passing game in the match against Waitaki, but its heavier opponents dictated play shortly after the start.
