Nelson Mandela, a leading official of the banned African National Congress, appeared in Court in Johannesburg today on a charge of incitement. He was remanded until August 16. The AttorneyGeneral opposed bail.

Mandela, the most wanted man in South Africa, had evaded a network of security branch police for more than two years.

The “Rand Daily Mail” said Mandela was arrested by security branch police near Howick. about 70 miles from Durban, on Sunday. Mandela was the underground leader of the National Action Council which organised Republic Day demonstrations last year.
