RACING DIFFICULT DOUBLE AT RICCARTON

Golden Defaulter Will Make Strong Bid Golden Defaulter will be the big attraction at Riccarton tomorrow. Nearly everyone who saw him win the Grand National last Saturday is confident he will win again in the Lincoln Steeplechase, in which he has 11-7. But Riccarton race records show what a difficult double is presented by the Grand National and the Lincoln. Horses have won this double only twice in the last 40 years, and it is 32 years since Aurora Borealis last carried it off. It is well established that the big Te Rapa chestnut is so strong in speed and stamina and such a good jumper that he is all but unbeatable when the ground is firm.

Unless the ground deteriorates markedly under rain before tomorrow Golden Defaulter will probably be backed as unbeatable. Dusky Prince will probably be confidently backed to beat Golden Defaulter if the ground is heavy. The Lincoln Steeplechase Is one of three jumping races tomorrow, others being the Sydenham Hurdles and the Styx Hack Hurdles. Daysun, a stablemate of Golden Defaulter, is the ruling favourite for the Sydenham Hurdles after two seconds earlier at the meeting.

He has gone up 71b for his second in the Grand National Hurdles, but will meet Vamoose half a stone better. The double will be on the Islington and Winter Handicaps, the main flat races on the programme. Fields, with form and riders are reviewed below.
