Barlow Kicks 16 Points
(N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU. August 8. A driving and mobile forward pack paved the way for South Canterbury to beat North Otago 34-8. and retain the Hannan Shield in a representative Rugby match at Fraser Park. Timaru. today.
Sixteen of South Canterbury's points came from the splendid goal-kicking of the full-back R. J. Barlow. Another outstanding performer for South Canterbury was the wing-three-quarters, J. M Cole, who capitalised on weak tackling to score three tries.
Fortunes changed quickly after half-time, when the home pack, lethargic and too loose in the first half, settled down to out-play the North Otago forwards in tight and loose. For most of the first half North Otago more than held its own. and the half-time score of 8-3 rather flattered South Canterbury But the visiting forwards folded up badly in the second half. Barlow kicked two penalties and five conversions for South Canterbury, and tries were scored by Cole <3l. R. M. Taiaroa (2). and R. Bailey. For North Otago. I. Coe scored a try. and Conlan kicked a penalty and a conversion.
