ADVANCE OF TUNNEL

July Progress “Excellent” Excellent progress on the driving of the ChristchurchLyttelton road tunnel last .-nonth was reported to the Hoad Tunnel Authority by the Ministry of Works yesterday The tunnel face was advanced by 581 ft to 5892 ft during the month. This left ; bout 270 ft of full-scale tunnelling to be done, and another 30ft to enlarge to full size the top heading driven at the Lyttelton portal. In the week ended July 28, < record of 20 rounds "was < rilled and fired, advancing tie face by 206 ft, which was also a record for the project. Early in July the country t-aversed deteriorated and a 1 irge number of rock bolts had to be inserted In the f blowing week it was necessary to build 16 steel arch supports, the first for more t lan 4000 ft. Thereafter, conditions improved and good progress was made in the second half of the month Good progress was also made with the tunnel lining. The wall footings had now advanced to 3625 ft on the left side and 3775 ft on the right a id 2496 cubic yards of concrete had been poured on this work. The concreting of the tunnel walls had been advanced fiom 1350 ft to 2200 ft.
