DISPUTE ON VEHICLES

Instruction By Mr Goosman (Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 8. The Minister of Works (Mr Goosman) told Parliament today that drivers will not have to operate the six 15ton transporters of the Ministry of Works, banned by the New Zealand Workers’ Union, until they had been inspected by the Health Department and Transport Department. Mr J. Mathison (Opposition, Avon) asked Mr. Goosman what he was going to do to correct the position after the union, “in the interests of the health of some of its members,” declared these transporters unsafe. He told Mr Mathison that the departmental officers would determine whether the machines were in any way in. furious to health. He declined to comment on Mr Mathison's question on whether compensation would be paid to a driver whose health had been affected, on the grounds that this was a legal matter. The South Island Workers’ Union secretary (Mr W A Dempster) last week said that the machines—six of them in the South Island, at Christchurch, Dunedin and Otematata—were injurious to the drivers’ health because of the inadequate cab ventilation and noise.
